Church History

A detailed history of the church will be posted soon. However temporarily a brief history of the church can be found below.
The name Theydon Garnon comes from the name of a family descended from Robert de Gernon who came over from Normandy with William the Conqueror. One of his descendants married Beatrix, daughter of Henry de Taydon in Henry III?s reign (1216-1272). So when she inherited the land it became her husband?s, Sir William de Gernon.
From the name Gernon the words Gamon (Theydon Garnon), Garnish (Garnish Hall once the Manor House of the area. Only a few yards from the church) are derived.
The church was built on the site were it is because an old road to London ran past the site of the church.
It is almost definite that Queen Elizabeth would have visited All Saints'' Church, Theydon Garnon because it is a fact that she stayed at Garnish Hall (Then Gernons Hall) during one of her Royal Progress? in 1572. As she was head of the Church of England it seems unlikely she would have been within a few yards of the the Church and not visited.
